FORT KNOX, KY. – No matter your role within the Army, it is important to know the basics. Cadets assigned to 9th Regiment, Advanced Camp, learn basic field operations during warrior skills training during Cadet Summer Training on Fort Knox, Ky., July 27, 2025. This training provides Cadets with the challenge of understanding various practices they may encounter during their Army career.
“You have to understand the absolute fundamentals of what others in your field are doing,” said Cadet Donovan Stein, Ferris State University. “This is so you can make decisions based on time, resources and other factors that may come into play.”
Stein originally intended to go into a career of welding and engineering but later found that the Army had similar opportunities that aligned with his intentions.
“There were two dreams in my life, becoming a welder and serving this great nation,” said Stein. “After being directed to the officer route it has been nothing but a blessing.”
As a welding engineering technology major, Stine is able to use what he uses in the classroom and apply it in different ways at CST to become a better leader.
“You have to know what you’re asking of your subordinates and there can be a disconnect between the two, but if you put yourself in their shoes then it helps you become a successful leader,” said Stine.
While some Cadets align their schooling with the tactical side of the Army, some Cadets choose different routes. Cadet Elise Michael, Pennsylvania State University, plans to join the nurse corps upon commissioning.
“When I first got to college, I wanted a program to fit into,” said Michael. “I thought ROTC would be cool because of the opportunities it provides for me and people who wish to go into Army nursing.”
Michael expresses that while some of the training she confronts at CST is not in her wheelhouse, she is still finding ways to overcome the adversity while continuing to learn.
“I think that this warrior skills training isn’t relevant to my major, but it has given me the opportunity to persevere and have a positive outlook on it,” said Michael.
Warrior skills equips Cadets with the knowledge and foundation they will need for future training events. While some may use it in their daily Army careers, some may use this as a learning experience more than anything.
