Command Sergeant Major’s Biography


Command Sergeant Major Roy A. Young enlisted in the Army in 1996 as an Infantryman. A 1996 graduate of Tishomingo County High School in Iuka, Mississippi, he holds a Master of Arts in Human Service Counseling and Executive Leadership from Liberty University.

Command Sergeant Major Young began his career with Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment where he served as Ammo Bearer, M203 Grenadier, M249 Squad Automatic Weapon Gunner, Fire Team Leader, Rifle Squad Leader, and Weapons Squad Leader. His next assignment was in the Regimental Reconnaissance Company, Special Troops Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment where he served as a Senior Reconnaissance Sergeant, Assistant Team Sergeant, Team Sergeant, Reconnaissance Company Operations Sergeant and First Sergeant. He was subsequently assigned to the 75th Ranger Regimental Headquarters as the RS3X where he oversaw Special Access Programs. In April 2014, Command Sergeant Major Young was selected to serve as the Operations Sergeant Major for the Special Troops Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment. From 2016 to 2019, Command Sergeant Major Young served as the Battalion Command Sergeant Major of the 1st Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Airborne & Ranger Training Brigade. Command Sergeant Major Young served as the Brigade Command Sergeant Major of the 199th Infantry Brigade from June of 2019 until May 2022.

Command Sergeant Major Young’s military education includes Javelin Gunner Course, Reconnaissance Training Course, Combatives Level 3, Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape (SERE), Military Mountaineering Course, all levels of Non-Commissioned Officer Education System and the Joint Special Operations Forces Senior Enlisted Advisor Course.

His awards and decorations include: the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal (3rd Award), the Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Award), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (8th Award), Joint Service Achievement Medal (2nd Award), Army Achievement Medal (6th Award), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Army Valorous Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal (8th Award), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (2nd Award), Afghanistan Campaign Medal (5th Award), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (6th Award), the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd Award), and the NATO Medal.

He has also earned the Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Air Assault Badge, Senior & Master Parachutist Badge, and Basic & Master Freefall Parachutist Badge. Command Sergeant Major Young also holds the German Parachutist Badge, Chilean Parachutist Badge, Netherlands Parachutist Badge and Canadian Parachutist Badge.
