FORT KNOX, Ky.-While the bright sunshine warms the air and a nice breeze flows outside, Army officers are diligently working inside with Observer, Coach, Trainer Academy to ensure that they have all the necessary skills and knowledge to guide the incoming Cadets. This group, assigned to Cadets from the 3rd Regiment, Advanced Camp, spent their time learning all about the Engagement Skills Trainer, a virtual range used to prepare Cadets for the M4 qualifications.

“The USACC mission is to recruit, educate, develop and inspire,” said Master Sgt. Gene Zhang, OC/T Academy Instructor, “In the Academy, we focus on educating, developing, but really that inspirational piece. Inspiring the future leaders.”

OC/Ts are Soldiers who will be training, mentoring and evaluating Cadets. Today, the OC/Ts are working their way through the EST, familiarizing themselves with the simulated targets, adjusting sights, and coaching techniques.

“(Learning) how to coach Cadets while they’re on the range,” said 2nd Lt. Rosean Rhone, assigned to 3rd Regiment, Charlie Company, “and giving that effective feedback so that we’re not overwhelming them.”

For 2nd Lt. Mason Stewart, assigned to 3rd Regiment, Charlie Company, the OC/T Academy refreshes skills he learned during his own Cadet Summer Training a year prior and pushes him to become a better leader.

“In the Army we lead by example,” said Stewart, “As a Cadre member you should be able to do whatever a Cadet can do.”

All of this training boils down to the importance of OC/Ts being able to best assess and help in all aspects of every event. It also allows them the opportunity to test the equipment and place themselves in Cadets’ boots. Overall, making them prepared for any question or need that may arise.

Rhone is especially ready for his chance to be out in the field with Cadets, “I’m happy to see next generation of future leaders grow and develop as they come through Cadet Summer Training.”

As Alexander Graham Bell once said, “before anything else, preparation is the key to success” and these OC/Ts are giving their all to help Cadets succeed during Advanced Camp and prepare them to commission as Second Lieutenants.
