FORT KNOX, Ky. – Cadets from 8th Regiment, Advanced Camp, celebrated their graduation from Cadet Summer Training, Aug. 8, 2024, on Fort Knox. This event gave families and friends an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments and completion of their training. Several Cadets were highlighted and given regimental awards, showcasing their efforts and dedication.

Cadet Charles Mediavilla, Syracuse University, N.y, was recognized with the prestigious Truman Citizen-Soldier Award. This achievement is given to the top Cadet in their regiment, selected by the Regimental Cadre Board.

Mediavilla expressed relief and excitement as he reflected on completing the rigorous 35-day training. Despite the challenges, Mediavilla spoke highly of his experience, noting the bonds formed with his squad and platoon as one of the highlights of his journey.

“Honestly, I had a great time. There were a lot of difficult times, like being out in the field while it was pouring rain” Mediavilla said. “But for the most part, I had a good squad, a good platoon. Everyone was kept together, and we all had just a great time.”

Mediavilla reminisced about some of his favorite memories from Advanced Camp, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and resilience in the face of adversity.

“Some of my favorite memories were my platoon and I embracing the challenges together,” Mediavilla said. “One event I remember would be the CBRN chamber. There were many times we just had to embrace our trials.”

Mediavilla’s journey in ROTC has been guided by his lifelong aspiration to join the military. Reflecting on it, he explained how the ROTC program provided the perfect opportunity to pursue both a college education and military service.

“I’ve always wanted to join the military my whole life,” Mediavilla explained. “Because of ROTC, I was able to go to college and be able to learn a lot and become a leader.”

As the 8th Regiment concluded their time at Fort Knox, Mediavilla and the awardees’ achievements were recognized, not only as a personal victory but also for the dedication and commitment that all Cadets bring to their training. Looking back at the beginning of his journey, Mediavilla offered a piece of advice to his past self and future Cadets.

“There’s definitely some heavy competition here,” Mediavilla said. “Just be ready for that.”

Mediavilla’s accomplishments and recognition serve as inspiration and motivation to his peers. It’s a reminder of the values and lessons that the ROTC program instills in its Cadets. As he heads home with his family and prepares to move onto the next chapter, the lessons and the bonds he gained during his time in Advanced Camp will undoubtedly shape his future as a leader in the United States Army.
