FORT KNOX. Ky– For many Cadets from the 5th Regiment Advanced Camp, they strive to use their experiences from both Cadet Summer Training and their future commission as a way to leave an impact on both the Army and their communities.
For Cadet Jacob Powell, a Wright State University student, his family strongly supported him when he decided to follow the footsteps of his father and join the U.S. Army. Powell intends on joining the Medical Corp to become a nurse – just like his brother and mother.
“I love helping people and bringing others up,” said Powell. “My mom really inspired me and kept me going.”
Cadet Tucker Reed, a student from Texas Christian University, hopes to leave the Army in a better place than he found it after he commissions.
“The biggest thing that I hope for in my career as an officer in the U.S. Army is to train my replacement,” said Reed.
Cadet Keilani Barclay, a student from Oregon State University, received a call nearly everyday from her recruiter prior to her enlistment. Receiving such overwhelming support, not only did it make Barclay’s enlistment process easier, it also helped her develop a sense of belonging within the Army.
“A lot of my little brothers are now looking to go into the military,” said Barclay. “I’m very happy that I can be that idol so they can set themselves up for a good future.”
Cadet Emily Jones, a student from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, shared a similar motivation for the next generation of Soldiers.
For Jones, who joined ROTC through the Green to Gold program, she hopes to pass down the skills she learned from her mentors– not only just to her peers at Cadet Summer Training, but also to her future subordinates as an Officer.
“I wanted to be a part of something a little bit bigger than myself,” she said. “Being an officer just opens up the score of impact that I’ll have on the Army.”
