FORT KNOX, Ky. – From showcasing excellence in leadership among their peers to illustrating a dedication to their duties, the values of a scout and a Soldier create a similar reflection of leadership.

For nearly 10 years Cadet Tyler Cochran, a Marion Military Institute student who is assigned to 1st Regiment, Basic Camp, has been a member of Scouting America, with his experience contributing to his enlistment in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.

“It’s just always helped propel me,” said Cochran. “It opened up my eyes to a bunch of different career paths.”

During his time in Scouting America, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout – the highest and most prestigious rank within the organization. Although Cochran believes anybody could be an Eagle Scout, one must demonstrate qualities similar to that of an U.S. Army Officer in order to become one.

He also believes that many principles of Scouting America’s Scout Law share many similarities with that of the U.S. Army Values that Soldiers and cadets uphold. Both emphasize integrity, loyalty, respect, and selfless service – providing a foundation that extends into military service.

This foundation helps Cochran stay driven throughout Cadet Summer Training, with him showing a similar dedication to his drills and exercises.

“I’ve just always followed the scout law, and that’s how I’m gonna keep pushing forward,” Cochran said.
