FORT KNOX, Ky. — Joining the Army was never in the plan for Cadet Yahir Medina from Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. He was recently contracted in February, and last summer, during Basic Camp, his first introduction to the Army, Medina embraced his calling to serve.
For Medina, wanting to provide for both his current and future family has given him a sense of pride. Having a close-knit family, especially a strong relationship with his dad and grandpa, has been encouraging for Medina.
“I want to aspire to be just like them [dad and grandpa], if I can help my current family right now and then one day, if the Lord ever allows me to get married, have kids and help them and provide for them and have a strong foundation for their lives, discipline and all those things, I hope I can do that.”
Having a role model in his father has not only encouraged Medina but is a picture of the future he hopes to have.
“My dad is the best representation of what a dad could be, period, ever. For me, being a dad one day is the highest achievement I could ever achieve over anything; being a dad is up there.”
As a Mexican-American, Medina explains the strong bond within his family. He explains coming from a culture where he calls his parents every night, but due to upcoming training, not being able to talk to them for 10 days will be extremely challenging.
Staying motivated can be difficult for Medina, but due to the familiarity of camp, friendships and faith, he is able to continue on.
“Motivation comes and goes. I can’t rely on that. No one can rely on that. I am constantly praying. Constantly talking with the Lord.” Medina Said
“ I look to my left and my right to see other people doing the exact same thing that I’m doing. I am not doing this by myself, everyone’s suffering with me. We’re growing in friendships and relationships and I know l have already done this once [Basic Camp].”
Staying present and rooted in Medina’s foundations has aided him throughout Cadet Summer Training (CST) and the struggle of staying motivated.
“I’ve experienced a home here and I’m proud to be able to serve.”
