FORT KNOX, KENTUCKY – Cadets in 5th Regiment, Advanced Camp, spent the morning of July 5, 2024, immersed in a crucial part of their training: learning first aid. This training is designed to prepare them for real-life scenarios where their skills could mean the difference between life and death.

“This is a tactical environment area, where you have someone that’s been injured,” said Vincent Cyrus, Virginia Military Institute. “We practice transporting their body back to a safe position and conducting care on them.”

The importance of mastering these skills is emphasized throughout the day, ensuring that Cadets know the value of what they’re learning.

“For those of us that may see combat, we have to know these things,” said Cyrus. “ We have to be fluent and move smoothly so we don’t make any errors.”

Proficiency in first aid is not optional for those pursuing a military career; it is a necessity. The ability to perform medical procedures swiftly and accurately under pressure is a critical component of their training.

“It comes down to saving the guy next to you,” said Cyrus.

Among the cadets is William Lupton, a volunteer firefighter, whose experience has been invaluable during training.

“I am a volunteer firefighter back at home so I have some medical background,” said Lupton. “I’ve been able to give some pointers to some of the less experienced Cadets.”

His real-life experience has proven beneficial at camp, helping Lupton manage his stress and understanding when situations should be taken seriously.

“As a volunteer firefighter, I’ve been put in some really stressful situations,” said Lutpon. “It makes camp a bit less stressful knowing it’s not life or death.”

Cadets acknowledge the importance of first aid training as Lupton said, “It’s good to refresh our memories and know each person’s strengths and weaknesses.”

Regular practice ensures that cadets are prepared for any situation. “Doing it again and again will only make us better.”

First aid training is a vital component of a Cadet’s education. It prepares them to perform under pressure and ensures they are ready if called to action. Through rigorous and repetitive training, cadets hone their skills, ready to face the complexities of military service.
