FORT KNOX, Ky. – While many cadets can trace their path through generations of military service, some cadets create their own legacy rather than inheriting one.

Cadet Daniel Diehl, a student from the University of North Georgia assigned to 5th Regiment, Advanced Camp, was the first in his family to enlist in the Armed Forces. After graduating high school, he joined the Georgia Army National Guard before coming to Cadet Summer Training.

“Ever since I was little, I wanted to be in the military,” said Diehl. “It feels like I’m doing something bigger than myself and my family.”

Not only did he fulfill his dreams of serving his country, he also found an opportunity to pursue higher education – which was previously unobtainable due to his financial and academic circumstances.

In order to prove that he deserved the opportunity, Diehl was pushed to grow both as a better student and also a better person reflective of the core Army values.

“I focus a lot more on my studies and my academics more than anything,” he said. “I want to be the best I can be and prove that I have a spot in this.”

Diehl cites his family as his most important source of motivation throughout CST. Growing up, his family was often in a disadvantageous position – not knowing whether or not the water or lights would be on, or if there was food on the table for dinner. Despite these struggles, his family gave him a strong foundation that drives him today.

“Seeing where my parents have gotten in their life and giving me that foundation to work off of,” said Diehl. “It’s kind of a backboard for me to jump into the world and start on my feet running.”

Not only does he want to pay back his country for the opportunities it has afforded him, he wants to give back to his family and make sure they never have to struggle again.

“I think about my family every day,” he said. “Just all of the things I’m doing, they’re always there to support me.”
